Video-Review: Maailma Puhaltaa - Uniklubi

On October, the 26th it was first time aired in Finnish TV - Uniklubi's latest music video 'Maailma Puhaltaa'.

This was shot a few weeks ago in their home town Tampere, where countless supporters, as a result of a call (via web platforms like Facebook and the band's website), could be part of it .They were ordered to the harbour where some of the video sequences took place.
However, the clip concentrates on the band itself and disregards any other characters, which means that those supernumeraries aren't much visible in the final cut.
Only in a few scene you can see some young girls, hard to identify and in the end even blurred.
Generally it is a colourless designed video, what is meant anything but negative.
Thereto you have to understand that it contains two different sets.

First, the typical band set - the five members, armed with their instruments, ready to present their song in a show.

The background consists only of black and red bars and there are no other figures, as already mentioned. They are standing on a reflecting water surface, which is unfortunately poorly made, as you can clearly see the plans below. The idea is good, even if it recalls to many other better-known videos such as by the White Stripes or Greenday. Guitarists, bassist and drummer are seriously busy with their instruments, while the singer seems to be totally lost without a microphone. The scene might have been much more beautiful if they had offered him one because without this hold his fidgeting looks a bit weird.
You may get the impression that they had forbidden him to move his legs and he is now trying to balance somehow.

The second set consists of sequences shot all over the city. Every single member - and at that point I have to mention positively that, as you are simply used to by video clips, they not only pointing to the singer - takes its short way through an area of the city and in the end they arrive all together at the harbour.
These scenes are kept completely in black and white and very autumnal - on the one hand by the outfits and furthermore by the wind - so they match perfectly to the song title which means translated something like "The world blows."
Due to the paleness of the scene you won't be distracted or misled. There are no characters emphasized but just put an highlight onto the band which is playing in front of this bright red background bar.
The camera work is simply chosen and seems partly amateurish, but thus professional again.
It presents the grey sequences as everyday life and not as smoothed 'rockstar'-scenes.

My biggest criticism is the scene where singer Jussi bends down and sings to his reflection on the water surface. It appears a bit deranged and you get the impression he is feeling sick. What this scene is actually up to express remains questionable.
If there is something to criticize, so there is something to highlight. A very big plus is the guitar solo scene in which guitar player Pasi is solely shown for about almost 20 seconds, presenting his solo passionately. I especially enjoyed the moments where only his shadow was shown.
They also succeeded in creating a beautiful final where in the band scene colourful leaves are falling down and at the other set the band is united in front of an incognizable crowd, facing two red signs.

All in all, the video is very typical Uniklubi. Quiet and relaxed, very simple kept. Certainly it may seem boring for some, but on the whole, the mood of the song is perfectly reflected.
A successful work - a compliment to the director.
