CD-Review: Matthau Mikojan - Plastic Trays (Eng)

Matthau Mikojan
"Plastic Trays"
Release: 08.11.2010
Sound of Finland

As a pre-taste of the upcoming album, most likely released in the early spring 2011, the first single "Plastic Trays" was sold online by the 8th of November 2010.
More or less the publication was announced quite surprisingly a week before the exact date via Facebook and Matthau Mikojan's webpage.
A bit too little effort of promotion could be the conclusion. So more or less the band, which currently consists of Matthau, Simo and Janne (aka Jimmy Sindel), has to rely on word of mouth and the support of their fans to keep the selling going.

The first single can always be seen as a summary of indicating pieces of the later released record. Therefore it seems that this single was the perfect compromise to be chosen.
Of course there are no others songs available yet but the balance of "drama", "emotion", an ear-catching melody and a slight idea of a ballad, but not really a ballad, is insinuated but not determined that leads to the assumption as a good first single.
In addition to say, that this is by far not the best song that Matthau has ever written, it kind of reminds on a mixture of the first albums' country influence (Matthau Mikojan, R: 12.03.2008) and the poppy background of the second album (Mania for Life, R: 04.03.2009). So basically it means, that he sticks to his musical solo project roots and stays even more away from harder rock elements.

The line of the song is easy to follow as the rhythm doesn't change a lot through the song. Most notably is that this piece delivers a steady feeling of relaxation. No highlights appear, the melody doesn't hit up too much in different directions. For me it took some time to like this song. Recommendation is not too listen to it way too often. It might get on nerves as the melody has no significant changes. The beginning melody crawls straight into the ear and is not willing to leave some certain time after.
The chorus exceeds the quality of the verses outstanding. It has something touching, hence it reveals the message of “being left” sadness, telling clearly: out there you are on your own.

Some of the lines in the verses appear very known as they are often used in the lyrics of other artists, apparently belonging to every rockers' repertoire. According to this the song loses unfortunately authenticity.
As a matter of course it also includes strong sections which every person has to find on their own and surely will differ among the Matthau Mikojan Fans. Those won't be definitely not disappointed as they will get provided the casual good Matthau Mikojan - stuff. I personally have to say that I miss some development compared to the previous disc.
All in all it is a solid number that makes at least curious about the new creation, announced by the band as a “killertune”, whereas the former album already appeared 2 years ago, on condition it will be released in spring-time as they forecasted.
