Concert-Review: Barbe-Q-Barbies 04.12.2010

 Barbe-Q-Barbies
@ Klubi, Tampere
04.12.2010

This saturday night's programm: Female rock.
As an opening act for Tampere's old rocker Popeda the five girls of Barbe-Q-Barbies started to preheat the audience at the Klubi stage. Of course I had some kind of sceptical view on it because usually I am not a fan of women's voices. But don't get me wrong now, because I really do regard any women that is able to play an instrument or whose voice elates the people. As I said, I am just a bit sceptical.

At 9 p.m. sharp the first sounds came from the dark rooms of Klubi. Quickly rushed over from the great hall of Pakkahuone we arrived in front of the stage. The area in front of it, however, was anything than full, since the majority of the audience was staying in the concert hall to expect the later appearing Popeda.

The rocking girls on stage didn't care about that. They went straight down to business.
The guitars clang, bass and drums gave the rhythm and singer Niki bawled like crazy. Exactly like it should be for a rockband. So it is really neither here nor there wether men or women are in the spotlight.

There was just one difference to notice: the audience. So I was expecting a mostly female audience who can identify with the girls, live their lyrics and feels completely understood in the world of female rock. But the reality was different. The front rows were filled by ... men!
And I do not mean this kind of men who are full of scepticism standing in front of the band, having a carefull eye on them to see wether that have that something to be rockstars or not.
No, there were men who literally beat for the first row, sang along loudly, were jumping around and enjoyed the songs at its best. They seemed to be almost manically obsessed with the women and their sounds.
A little bit scary to be honest. So, I quickly decided for a row behind them, inside a in the meanwhile better filled Klubi.

They played about three quarters of an hour, everything the repertoire offered. They seemed to be
well-rehearsaled, coordinated and confident they performed the songs of their debut album "All over you" (Release: 13.10.2010). Songs that inspire to sing along, that make the audience jump and growl. It was a time for good vibes, sounding like party and good mood. Solely a slower, ballad related number was missing.

Musically, there is nothing to criticise. They sound like pure rock'n'roll, like the greats of the opposite sex which fill huge concert halls and rock the world.
Only just a little bit different.
Because the vocals were those of a woman. What was my impression, me, known as a sceptic when it comes to women's voices?
Brilliant! She was born to rock. The songs seem to be tailor-made to the sound that comes out of her mouth, it sounds naughty, strong and demanding the same time.
Niki Rock, it's what she calls herself, just seems to be the Finnish effigy of the Amercian Lisa Marie Presley. Visually you can see certain features in the face and also you can find some resemblence with the voices.
It is just that the music of Barbe-Q-Barbies is a little more rocking.

However, the other four also master their instruments without any question.
Especially guitar player Kaisa totally cut my feet off. Who would have thought that those gracefull and gentle woman hands are able to elicit such a sound from this instrument? It is a pleasure to watch her, as she melts into her instrument.
She is also the one you can identify immediately as a
rocker. The outfit, the look, the way of moving totally scream Rock'n'Roll. It is not different when it comes to the other girls. Perfectly styled as it is a must for a rocklady they stand together on stage present five eye-catchers.
Suddenly you can understand the men in the front row. Where else can you find visual delicacy combined with a talent and music like that?
Anyway, the girls definitely convinced me with their music and if they are around the next time, I certainly will be there.
