Matthau's Acoustic Sauna
30.10. & 07.11. & 13.11.
Tampere
Three dates showed the timetable of Matthau Mikojan in his hometown Tampere, three of his popular Matthau's Acoustic Sauna performances within two weeks are awaiting the fans.
It started with the show at 30.10.2009 at Dog's Home. Matthau played within the scope of Dog's Ball Gala, an event that gives awards around football - note well that it is about amateur football or also reffered to as pub-team. To cut a long story short: Already two hours before the beginning of the musical act the house was well filled. After what felt like the thousands award and the same often clapping of hands as expression of applause, the 'athletes' finally left the stage and left it to the one who was responsible for the musical part of the evening.
Matthau Mikojan, armed with his guitar, got started with joy. As first song he supplied "Cradle of Love", an often played cover. But this should not be the only Billy Idol song of the evening. Apparently enthusiastic about the music of this platinum blonde rockstar "Sweet Sixteen", "White Wedding" and "Don't need a gun" followed. He presented them convincingly and encouraged the audience to join in.
You felt the mood also in his own songs like "Stiletto Heels" or "Too Fortunate To Cry" and probably reached its top with the Popeda cover songs, where he played for example "Suuret Setelit" and "John Holmes". In the latter, Sir Christus stormed the stage and growled the strophes happily with his brother.
Christus, on this evening very well in playing mood, asked his brother also for a duett, where they, as expected, performed "Patience" by Guns'n'Roses. The song took in this particular version nearly twice as long, as Sir Christus did not get enough of his solo and found only back to the song when he was awakened by the younger of the two.
The band around Axl Rose became more often victim of a cover this night (e.g.: "Estranged" and "Don't Cry" ) at which the word vicitim brings definitely nothing negative about. Far from it, because in spite of two three beer Matthau was predominantly assured about the lyrics, strong as ever with his instrument and chose the right songs to bring the audience a wonderful evening.
About one week later it went on at Pub Ahjo. Who does not know the bar was certainly shocked of the small size after entering. Hardly bigger than a living room, it allowed not much freedom of movement, but could pay a cozy atmosphere. Remarkably well filled with regular guests, residents, friends and fans of the artist there was nothing to get in the way of an enjoyable night.
As with almost any Acoustic Sauna the most covered artists were Guns'n'Roses and Billy Idol. But the leading actor of the covered artists was this time Popeda. Even though the well-known hits of W.A.S.P.Forever Free" ) or just mentioned Guns'n'Roses ("Don't Cry", "Patience" ) and Billy Idol ("Cradle of Love", "Sweet Sixteen" ) went down well at the audience, the better they took the Finnish songs.
It was sung, screamed, luffed and danced. A song request after another reached the artist who fulfiled them with joy. The vibes in the small bar were great and the audience in a festive mood. But to grant one or the other a breather meanwhile Matthau Mikojan intoned the Elvis Presley ballads "You've lost that loving feeling" and "Can't help falling in love" that incited even a few couples to a cuddly dance.
Biggest surprise of the evening was probably the presentation of a new song. "Orange Moon" is its name and it found immediately favour with the audience. All in all once again Matthau Mikojan found a good mixture of songs and proved that you can also have big fun in tiny venues.
One more weekend ahead the last of the three announced Tampere acoustic shows was held. This time at Bar Bulldog in the borough named Kaleva.
Actually I was expecting a full house but when Matthau Mikojan started his show at 22 o'clock the bar was indeed anything than empty, but you were easily able to find some seat. If the mystical date of friday the 13th was responsible for it, I honestly doubt.
Matthau however seemed not to matter about this and began once again with a Billy Idol cover song, apparently with the goal to entertain his audience as its best. "Cradle of Love" again proved to be a great opener of the Acoustic Sauna. In addition to the songs he also played the last two times, for example "Sweet Sixteen", "You've lost that loving feeling", "Suuret Setelit" [video] and other Popeda songs [video], that again asured best humor, he tried this time as well a few new numbers. Noteworthy are "I've Lost You" [video], an Elvis cover or the beautiful and slow ballad "Keep holding on" (W.A.S.P.) [video] which he sang with great feeling. Above all, however, another Elvis Presley hit made an impact. "All Shook Up" [video], a fast, unfortunatley very short number did not allow anyone to stay quietly in their seats.
Sadly I have to mention that the shows that were actually announced under the description "covers and originals" are currently dominated by cover songs. To the regret of his fans Matthau plays hardly any own material. Same on this friday evening when he solely played the new number "Orange Moon" [video].
Except of a few small stumblers, that the artist overrode skilful with witty comments, the show went off well.
The instrument sounded good, the songs attained their effects and the audience did not seem to regret the visit. The only critisism goes to Matthaus voice which did not seem so firm and sounded like an upcoming flue, what acutally did not affect the quality of the songs.
Finally I can tell with a clear conscience that Matthau Mikojan understood to entertain his audience very well all three evenings and managed each time to adjust his show to the different target groups without dissembling himself.
The conclusion is therefore taken easily: if you have the chance to see one of those Acoustic Sauna shows, don't hesitate to join them, you certainly won't regret it.
